Most Higher Educatian uses two types of Analytics

Data

Predictive Data (Understanding the future)

Combines historical data to identify patterns in the data and applies statistical models and algorithms to capture relationships between various data sets to forecast trends and includes:

Development of Staff Dashboards to help predict student numbers and cohort mobility through programs to assist in identifying areas for improvement (SoLAR, 2021).

Analyzing the data

Prescriptive (advice on possible outcomes)

Focus is on courses where small changes could have a big impact on improving student engagement, feedback, and outcomes

Provides Data visualization via specific tools to provide program-level metrics on student enrollments, courses, results and survey feedback to give teaching staff visual snapshots of students in their programs

(SoLAR, 2021).

Ethics in Learning Analytics

"Protecting the data of individuals and preserving their privacy is not only essential for the acceptance and long-term viability of learning analytics but is a legal requirement in most jurisdictions" (Sclater, 2017)
